Edmond, Oklahoma: 5 Day portrait painting workshop

The Conservatory for Classical Art

Edmond, Oklahoma

5 Day portrait painting workshop

This is a five day portrait painting workshop focusing on developing the portrait over a longer pose. Every morning from 9 - 11am the instructor will demonstrate in order to lead students with what to work on for the day. The 1st day students will begin their long painting with brown paint in order to work out the drawing and proportions of the head, utilizing both linear drawing and massing-in the shadow pattern. The 2nd day students will incorporate flesh tones into the light mass in order to develop the value range, build with planes, practice modeling form and learning basic anatomy. The 3rd day we will take a break from the long pose and do multiple color studies, including one of our long pose set-up. The color theory of Henry Hensche will be explored. The 4th day students will return to painting the long pose by establishing the color block-in and color key of the painting as a whole. The 5th day students will practice building the smaller structures and modeling smaller forms, this will lead to finishing the features and focal point areas. Students will leave with one longer portrait painting and two shorter color studies; along with a greater understanding of the different stages of the painting process, the visual and conceptual tools we build with, and the principles which govern the visual language. This workshop is for beginner to advanced painters. Some prior painting experience is beneficial.

Albequeque, New Mexico USA

New Mexico Art League

Alla Prima Portrait Painting Workshop

Alla Prima is Italian for 'at first attempt'. This is a style of painting that has become fashionable since artists such John Singer Sargent and Richard Shmid exemplified how beautiful it can be. It is basically an oil painting done in one sitting while the paint is still wet, also known as 'wet into wet'. Using this as our parameter, each day the class will paint a portrait of a different model. The instructor will demo most mornings in order to guide students with what they will work on for the day and will help students at their easels throughout the rest of the day. The first two days the palette will be limited so as to focus on drawing and fleshtones. The third day will be devoted to color study. And the final two days we will combine the two approaches to produce portraits that have form, anatomy and color. Students will leave the workshop with 5 alla prima portrait paintings,  a greater understanding of the principles and methodology that paintings are built with, and having learned how to economize and simplify our 'seeing' in order to finish a portrait in one day.

Kimberly, Wisconsin: 3 day Portrait Painting Workshop

Richeson School of Art & Gallery

Kimberly, Wisconsin

3 Day portrait painting workshop

The purpose of this workshop is to study the building stages of creating a portrait painting from life. By following a basic process, we more closely examine each stage and its correlating visual principles.

Students work on two portrait paintings over this three-day workshop. The first days focus on drawing and proportions with a brown paint and then add fleshtones to build the planes of the head, features and practice modelling form. This will complete the first portrait exercise. The second day, students begin a two-day painting of a new model. The class begins the portrait in the same way, giving students an second chance to practice the method. Then. there is an extra day to develop the portrait, adding color which includes a basic color philosphy and how it relates to color in the fleshtones and surrounding objects such as clothing, hair and backdrop. Students also have an opportunity to further model form, develop the focal point and go about the finish pass. All stages are demonstrated by the instructor along with individual attention at each student’s easel. In addition, students study the use of edges, the concept of larger-to-smaller relationships, planar thinking, anatomical landmarks, the principles of light on form and paint handling. Students leave with two completed portrait paintings, a greater understanding of the process of start to finish and having discussed many of the visual principles the visual world is based upon.

Portrait Painting Workshop 5 days - Huntsville, Alabama

Prote'ge' Atelier

Huntsville, Alabama

The first day students will start with a brown paint in order to capture the gesture and use construction drawing to study the proportions of the head, focusing on the shadows as the foundation for the drawing. Then flesh tones are added to the light mass in order to develop a full value range, create planes and begin building the light on the form.

The second day we will practice color studies of the head using a basic abstract color theory and method.  An understanding of local color versus the color of the light source will be explored.

Finally, the last three days will be devoted to a long pose where students will practice building a painting using the exercises of the first two days and progressing toward the 'finish pass'.  The finish pass will study working wet-into-wet vs. wet-over-dry, the role and use of edges, developing focal points, the concept of larger to smaller relationships, modeling towards the light, paint handling and other issues as they come up.

All stages will be demonstrated by the instructor along with individual attention at each student's easel.

Advanced Figure Painting Workshop @ Studio Incamminati

This workshop will focus on the long pose with the figure as our subject. Every morning the instructor will demonstrate from 9am til 10:30 am, leading the students through each stage of the process. Students will first focus on the grisaille stage, which uses a brown paint to establish the proportions of the drawing stage. The instructor will talk about abstract relationships and working from larger to smaller shapes, basic anatomy and gesture, The next stage students will use flesh tones to establish a value range, building the planes of the structures and rendering form towards the light source. This will create the under-painting upon which color can then be built over top. A basic color theory will then be introduced; half way through the workshop the class will take a break from the long pose to practice color studies of the figure. We will then apply what we have learned about color to the long pose resulting in a full color under-painting. Finally, students will be guided how to build the 'final pass' or 'finish pass' of the portrait where students will learn about painting wet-into-wet vs. wet-over-dry, the principles of rendering light on form, artistic anatomy, managing color, rendering, edges and focal points. Students will have time to develop their figure painting to near full completion. The instructor will teach with visual demonstrations every morning as well as at each students easel throughout the day. This workshop is for beginner to advanced students, some drawing and painting experience is required. Completion of intensive painting workshops beforehand is also beneficial.

5 Day Portrait Painting Workshop - long pose

Students will start with a grisaille in order to capture the gesture and use Bargue drawing type thinking to study the proportions of the head. Then flesh tones are added to develop a fuller value range and begin building the illusion of light on form. Color studies using a basic abstract color theory and an understanding of the color of the light source will be explored and then weaved into this process as we enter the middle stages of the painting.

Finally, the second half of the week will be devoted to a long pose where students will practice building their painting in preparation for the 'final pass' or 'finish pass' which will also be explored. All stages will be demonstrated by the instructor along with individual attention at each student's easel.

In addition we will study the use of edges, focal points, the concept of larger to smaller relationships, planar thinking, anatomical landmarks and paint handling. The class will start with shorter head studies progressing toward a 2 ½ day portrait painting at the end of the week. Students leave with a greater understanding of the cohesive painting process and the ability to integrate the exercises into that process. This moves them closer to painting a more complete portrait.

Kerry Dunn conducts a three-hour portrait demo Sunday, Oct. 4, 4–7 p.m. which is free for workshop attendees and open to the public ($30). Light refreshments will be served.

Still Life Painting Workshop 5 days: Philadelphia

The workshop explores the building stages of a painting from beginning to finish. Still life is ideal for this type of study because it provides a subject and light source that is constant.

The first day of the workshop students spend setting up their individual still life arrangements and executing small painting thumbnails in order to find the composition for the final painting. Day two, students begin the final painting that they have four days to develop. Every morning the instructor works on a demo painting from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and the rest of the day teaches at the students' easels.

The painting stages consist of the initial grisaille, where drawing and proportion are strictly observed.Subsequent stages move into the full-color block-in where abstract value and color relationships are established and adjusted. The larger-to-smaller shape principle is observed as students move through this process. In addition, students and instructor discuss the concept of light on form, establishing value and color parameters, edge development, paint handling, focal points, and when a work is considered complete. Students leave with a completed painting and concepts and skills acquired.

Beginner, intermediate and advanced painters are welcome. Some basic experience is beneficial before taking this workshop.

Portrait Painting Workshop - Alla Prima - 5 day - Boston MA.

Academy of Realist Art Boston

Alla Prima is a wet-into-wet painting technique where the painting is finished in one sitting and has become a very popular method over the last 100 years. We will have a different portrait model for each day of this workshop. The instructor will demo in the mornings from 9 - 10:30am to lead students with what they will work on for the day. The first day students will practice building a day long painting focusing on proportion and blocking in flesh tones along with a few color accents to develop a value range, the planes of the head, and begin rendering form and some basic anatomy of features, etc. The second day we will switch gears and do two color study paintings following the color theory of Henry Hensche. As long as proportions and values are under control then color can be pushed as far as possible even when getting into smaller planes and facial features. This is a great way to get students to push color outside of their comfort zones. The last three days students will practice combining both approaches into one cohesive method by starting with a grisaille and flesh tones, and then adding color and developing further, resulting in three additional one day paintings, each completed while the paint is still wet. We will also cover anatomy, edges, working from larger to smaller, modeling form and develop features and focal points. Students will leave with six paintings total, one flesh tone, two color studies, and three finished alla prima portraits. A 3 hour public demonstration by the instructor will be conducted the day before the workshop begins. This workshop is for beginners to advanced painters.

Portrait Painting Workshop - 3 days - Ponte Vedra Beach Florida

PONTE VEDRA CULTURAL CENTER

This three-day oil painting portrait workshop will introduce students to drawing, flesh tone and color exercises the first day and applying these lessons to a two-day-long pose. The drawing portion will focus on calibrating tilts and distances, also known as proportions, which are key to getting likeness. We will then build on this by adding adding flesh tones in the light mass of a few limited values in order to build the planes of the head and begin modeling form. Color study is a separate exercise where students will play with and exaggerate color notes in order get outside of their comfort zone and become more perceptive to color possibilities. The long pose will integrate the lessons learned into one painting process with more time to develop further leading towards finishing the focal point areas. The instructor will demo every morning in order to lead students with what they will work on for the day as well as helping students at their easels throughout the day. Students will leave with one flesh tone study, one color study and one log pose painting, a better understanding of the principles of individual exercises and the building stages a portrait goes through including the finish stage.

A public portrait painting demonstration open to the public on Friday night at 6pm. I will paint from a live model for about 1 and half hours and then answer questions on my painting process, my training, etc.

The purpose of this 3 day portrait workshop is for students to better understand the stages of a portrait and the correlating visual principles of each stage. The workshop is broken up into three 1 day poses. Each day we will focus on a different stage of development and students will be able to progress further each day. The first day will be devoted to proportion (the key to likeness) and basic value relationships using a flesh tone. The second day we will repeat this process adding warm and cool color notes to our flesh tones much in line with the old masters formula. The third day again repeat the process with the addition of a basic color theory and strategy for incorporating it into our portraits (and paintings in general). Also discussed during the workshop: edges, the concept of how light hits form, the principle of working from larger to smaller and paint handling. The instructor will do demonstrations as well as help students with their paintings. Students will leave with three portraits each focusing on a different level of completion and greater understanding of both process and the visual principles and visual tools one builds with.

Experience the progressive study of Studio Incamminati's Professional Program in a concentrated form.

This workshop is for experienced painters who work closely with instructors as they move through all the stages of developing a painting. Students review fundamental concepts with experienced instructors who offer personal instruction and guidance through all stges. Students are taught to understand the importance of relating planes of value and relating the main color mases. In additon, students learn to build on these fundamentals through the stages of a painting. Students progress from strong "block-in" to developing specific areas of the painting. Instructors also emphasize understanding the effects of light and color on the human form as well as modeling values with color.

On the first day, students work with shorter poses. During the final four days, students get a total of 24 hours of long-pose portrait work. These longer poses enable students to put workshop stages and concepts into practice.

(I may adjust the amount of time spent on the long pose as I see is most beneficial to student learning).

This workshop explores the building stages of a painting from start to finish. The constant subject and light source, make still life deal for this type of study.

The first day, students set up individual still-life arrangements and execute painting thumbnails to determine the composition. Day two, students begin their final painting which they have four days to develop. For 90 minutes at the start of each class, the instructor works on a demo painting. For the rest of the class, he teaches at the students’ easels. The first painting stage consists of the initial grisaille where drawing and proportion are strictly observed. Subsequent stages move into the full color block-in where abstract value and color relationships are established and adjusted.

The larger-to-smaller shape principle is observed as students move through this process. In addition, class discussions center on the concept of light on form, establishing value and color parameters, edge development, paint handling, focal points, and determining when a work is considered complete. Students leave with a completed painting, enhanced skills and a deeper understanding of essential concepts. Beginner, intermediate and advanced painters are welcome. Some basic experience is beneficial.
