Portrait Painting Workshop - Alla Prima - 5 day - Boston MA.

Academy of Realist Art Boston

Alla Prima is a wet-into-wet painting technique where the painting is finished in one sitting and has become a very popular method over the last 100 years. We will have a different portrait model for each day of this workshop. The instructor will demo in the mornings from 9 - 10:30am to lead students with what they will work on for the day. The first day students will practice building a day long painting focusing on proportion and blocking in flesh tones along with a few color accents to develop a value range, the planes of the head, and begin rendering form and some basic anatomy of features, etc. The second day we will switch gears and do two color study paintings following the color theory of Henry Hensche. As long as proportions and values are under control then color can be pushed as far as possible even when getting into smaller planes and facial features. This is a great way to get students to push color outside of their comfort zones. The last three days students will practice combining both approaches into one cohesive method by starting with a grisaille and flesh tones, and then adding color and developing further, resulting in three additional one day paintings, each completed while the paint is still wet. We will also cover anatomy, edges, working from larger to smaller, modeling form and develop features and focal points. Students will leave with six paintings total, one flesh tone, two color studies, and three finished alla prima portraits. A 3 hour public demonstration by the instructor will be conducted the day before the workshop begins. This workshop is for beginners to advanced painters.
